The last time we saw the fender it was shedding 3 layers of ugly paint. Unfortunately the ugliness didn’t end there. Beneath that ugly paint was another unsightly mess. Apparently someone had done a poor job with a welder and a cheap patch panel and after many years the patch panel had rusted and needed some patching. The top of the fender just behind the headlight had seen better days as well. So naturally the only thing to do was start cutting holes.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIn the photo above you can see the nasty patch panel with a few fresh holes in it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOn the inside of the fender I had to cut away the support to gain access for sand blasting and cleaning. I’ll have to weld the support back on later.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAbove is the hole in the top of the fender.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis is the patch bonded in place.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis is the bottom patch as shown from the inside of the fender. I forgot to get a picture from the other side before putting filler over it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHere’s what it looked like after some time with the filler and sandpaper.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAnd the top of the fender with filler.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis is the fender after final sanding and metal prep for primer.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIt looks pretty good in primer from a distance. But with this nice glossy epoxy primer now I can see all the minor imperfections that still need to be dealt with.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe top side still needs some work too.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe side has a few dings as well. But at least it’s all in one piece and not rusting anymore.
